I came across some haikus my son had written (in previous years), and I remembered Dick and Elena talking about them. Thought I would try.
They are fun, Cheryl. After playing with it for a bit, you start getting the hang of the 5-7-5... actually, I've read that as long as it is less than 17 syllables (5+7+5) then it is still a haiku. I like the discipline of it. kind of like a puzzle.
I remember having a book of poetry in high school that I really started to get into. It had poems from various poets, and it would give a short bio on each poet, and talk a bit about each poem that was presented. some of the imagery I didn't get at first (or the images were from another era).. but after a while, I started to really enjoy it. Probably because I had more of an understanding of it. and some of it was over my head. :P
all poetry has structure.. but I like the haiku because it is a well defined kind of structure.
you should try it! I bet you would be good at it. it's fun!
