In Response To: Thanks, Maddy! (Lynne)

: But it is like comparing apples and oranges. I don't think a
: dog is happy unless they have some job. They are pack
: animals. And if you are their pack, you cannot find a more
: loyal companion.

When we had two dogs, they didn't care all that much if I was included in their pack...They had one another.

BUT, with Chloe, an only pet, she insists my husband and I keep us all together..
that we take her everywhere and include her in most everything.

Every evening, after dinner, she climbs on the sofa in the living room and waits for us to join her...She waits for us to come in with her toys, our tea or coffee and then she's happy. I'm obliged to show up...busy or not...I'm obliged to sit down on that sofa and BE a pack member for her. She is patient...She will wait for as long as it takes for my husband and I to show up. If one of us sits down first, she hangs her body over the sofa waiting for the other. And finally, when we're all together, she thinks she's one of "us"... sticks her head into our cups, expecting to be able to drink our tea or coffee. From me, she usually gets one last dribble of green tea...sticks her face inside a deep mug and licks out the remains. From my husband, she gets a treat of freeze dried wild salmon which he's hidden in his
pocket. We are well trained.

As for her job, she goes to work daily with my husband to his retail store in a
busy small town...Her "job" is public relations...greeting customers, getting
petted...walking around town and being invited into other stores...Even stores
that have signs that say "no pets", open their door and invite her inside..Everyone knows her name...People shout it out from passing cars.."Hi Chloe!"...Kids come into the store especially to visit with Chloe..She has the perfect job for her personality. She's incredibly friendly....loves everyone...makes everyone feel special...She would have been really bored staying home...She knows her job is to be social...

Had her coat been thicker and longer this year, she could have entered the Westminster Dog show. Her handler said she needs another year of coat growth...Maybe next year, we'll enter her..I know she's the type of dog to
look at a judge and whisper " please pick me..!"

: Cats are more solitary, but I think very affectionate with
: those they love. but the instincts are very strong. They
: are natural hunters, and I think they can be destructive
: if they don't have an outlet for this.

: I think in order to live with any animal, you must find a way
: to incorporate their nature into your life. not change
: their nature. Their nature is part of their beauty.
